The Road To Will — Episode 2 — Planes, Motorcycles, and Couchsurfing
Although Will Rogers was an avid flyer, I prefer to keep wheels on the ground and prefer to travel by motorcycle. I also don’t really get a lot out of staying in a hotel, but prefer to stay with actual people who know the area. That’s why I have been very grateful to meet amazing people on couchsurfing.com.
Over the last three years, I’ve ridden over 40,000 miles through 40 states and stayed with over 40 couchsurfing hosts. I’ve hosted over a dozen myself when I’ve been in Sarasota, and it’s been fascinating to learn more about Argentina, Ukraine, Spain, Italy, Turkmenistan, and so many other places as I’ve had visitors from those lands come right into my home. And as much as I enjoy helping my guests get a lay of the land and helping them to find interesting things to do in a town they’ve never been to before, that’s also one of the things I appreciate about staying with couchsurfing hosts.
Sure, your hotels come with all sorts of printed literature, and sometimes the employees might suggest a few things, but as someone who has worked in the service industry for years, I know that a lot of the suggestions offered are just sponsors or popular establishments that usually just automatically come out. But when you spend a little more time with a person, as you do when you stay with someone in the couchsurfing community, you not only get more refined suggestions, you might also get someone to go experience the area with.
