Guide Us Into Jubilee: An Open Call to Members of the Roman Catholic Church, the Southern Baptist Convention, the Nation of Israel, and the Hearts of Christian Believers Everywhere
As people around the world are spending this time in quarantine and under lock-down to battle this global pandemic, many are wondering how they will pay what they owe. Because the majority of citizens trade their time and labor for money with which to pay bills and debts, a month without making those exchanges puts a lot of people in a very challenging financial predicament. For those of the Judeo/Christian tradition, perhaps we should seek the answer the book of Leviticus provides through the Year of Jubilee and cancel all debts, as God commanded.
Although it is a very precise ritual that encourages healthier soil and more robust agriculture by not planting or harvesting on every seventh year, and though it offers a release from the maddening chicanery of man-made economics by pushing a reset button on the financial sector every fifty years, the year of Jubilee is neither discussed nor practiced in any known Jewish sect nor any Christian Church.
